Glitter Dust Bottle - Haanz Sri Lanka
Haanz Art GuideFree, practical advice from the team at Haanz Art & Craft Materials

Glitter makes cards, decorations and school projects shine, but it also has a habit of ending up on the floor, the sofa and everyone’s face. With a few simple habits, glitter crafts can be sparkly without the mess. This Haanz Art Guide explains how to apply glitter neatly, how to seal it so it stays put, how to use glitter in resin, and which no-mess glitter materials are good for young children.

How to use glitter without the mess

  1. Set up a glitter tray. Work inside a baking tray, a shallow box or on a folded sheet of paper. This catches almost all the loose glitter.
  2. Apply glue only where you want sparkle. Use a thin brush or a fine nozzle and keep the glue lines neat. Glitter sticks only where the glue is.
  3. Sprinkle from close up. Hold the bottle just above the glue and sprinkle gently. Do not shake it from high up.
  4. Tap off the extra. Lift the card, turn it on its side and tap it gently over the folded paper.
  5. Return the glitter. Use the fold in the paper as a funnel to pour the extra back into the bottle.
  6. Let it dry flat. Leave the work to dry fully before you touch it or stand it up.
  7. Clean up with tape. Press sticky tape or a damp cloth on the table to lift stray glitter. Wiping with a dry cloth only spreads it.

Seal glitter so it stays put

Loose glitter keeps falling off over time. Once the glue is completely dry, brush a thin coat of FUJIN Acrylic Varnish 100ml over the glitter area to hold it in place. You can also brush varnish on first, sprinkle glitter into the wet coat, then add a second coat once dry. Another easy method is to mix a pinch of glitter into acrylic or poster paint and paint it on like normal colour.

Glitter crafts ideas to try

  • Greeting cards. Add glitter to a name, star or flower on the front. See our Handmade Greeting Cards Guide.
  • Festival decorations. Glitter stars, ornaments and lanterns for Vesak, Deepavali or Christmas. Our Christmas Crafts Guide has more ideas.
  • Resin keychains. Stir a little glitter into UV Resin 50g before filling the mould. A small amount goes a long way, and too much can make resin cloudy or stop UV light reaching the bottom.
  • Bookmarks. Cut glitter foam into strips and add a tassel or ribbon.
  • Party crowns. Cut crown shapes from card and decorate with glitter foam shapes and glitter tape.

Glitter safety tips

  • Craft glitter is not made for skin, lips or face. Keep it away from eyes, and do not rub eyes during glitter crafts.
  • For very young children, choose glitter foam, glitter tape and glitter pipe cleaners instead of loose glitter. Read our Kids Craft Materials Guide for more ideas.
  • Keep lids closed when not in use, and store bottles out of reach of small children.
  • Wash hands after glitter crafts.
