Resin curing in hot, humid weather is a real challenge in Sri Lanka. Warm rooms make epoxy set faster than expected, and damp air can leave pieces cloudy, sticky or full of bubbles. This Haanz Art Guide explains how heat and humidity affect resin, and gives simple steps to help your epoxy and UV resin cure clear and hard, even during the monsoon.

How heat and humidity affect resin

  • Heat speeds up epoxy. Epoxy cures by a chemical reaction that makes its own heat. In a hot room, it thickens sooner, so you have less working time.
  • Big pours can overheat. A large amount of mixed resin in one cup or one deep pour can get very hot, crack, yellow or set unevenly.
  • Moisture causes cloudiness. Water from damp air, wet moulds or inclusions can make resin cloudy or leave a greasy, sticky film on the surface.
  • Hardener absorbs moisture. An open bottle left in humid air can spoil over time.

Many resin makers suggest working in a room that is not too hot and not damp. Check the temperature range printed on your pack and try to stay within it.

Set up your space for resin curing

  1. Pick the right room. Choose a room that is dry and well ventilated, away from the kitchen and bathroom steam. An air-conditioned room helps, as it is cooler and drier, but keep fresh air moving.
  2. Choose the time of day. Early morning or evening is often cooler than midday. Avoid pouring on very wet days if you can.
  3. Keep it level and covered. Pour on a level table and cover the moulds with a box to keep out dust and insects while curing.
  4. Dry everything. Wipe moulds, cups and tools dry before use. Make sure dried flowers, shells and paper are completely dry.

Mixing and pouring tips for hot weather

  • Mix small batches. Mix only what you can pour in a few minutes. Use an Epoxy Mixing Cup to measure exactly, and a Silicone Mixing Stick so you can clean it and reuse it.
  • Measure carefully. FUJIN 1:1 Crystal Clear Epoxy Resin, 100ml + 100ml has an easy 1:1 ratio by volume. Most craft epoxies are 1:1 or 2:1 by volume, so always follow your pack.
  • Pour soon after mixing. Do not leave mixed resin standing in the cup, where heat builds up fastest.
  • Pour in thinner layers. For deep moulds, pour several layers and let each one set before the next. This keeps heat under control.
  • Stir slowly. Fast stirring traps air, and bubbles are harder to remove once the resin thickens.

UV resin in humid weather

UV Resin 50g cures in minutes under a UV lamp, so it is less affected by long curing times in damp weather. Still, follow these tips:

  • Cure in thin layers under a lamp such as the Hand Held UV Light (Heavy) or the UV Light, Desktop Small 15W.
  • If the surface feels slightly tacky, cure it again for longer and turn the piece over to cure the back.
  • Keep the bottle closed and out of sunlight when not in use.

Storing resin in Sri Lankan weather

  • Close bottles tightly straight after use and wipe the necks clean.
  • Store in a cool, dry, dark place, off the floor and away from direct sun.
  • Keep resin in a sealed box with a few silica gel packets to reduce damp.
  • Write the opening date on each bottle and use older stock first.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my resin still sticky after two days?

The most common causes are an incorrect ratio, not stirring long enough, or moisture. Check your measuring, mix for the full time on the pack, and work in a drier room next time.

Can I use a fan to cool resin while it cures?

A gentle air flow in the room helps ventilation, but do not point a fan straight at wet resin, as it blows dust onto the surface. Keep the piece covered.
