Drawing Pencil Grades Explained: H, HB and B Pencils for Sketching

Drawing pencils are among the best-selling items in our shops, and the question we hear most is “which grade should I buy?” This guide explains drawing pencil grades in plain language: what the letters and numbers mean, which grades a beginner really needs, and the papers and erasers that make shading easier.
What do H, HB and B mean on a pencil?
A pencil “lead” is not lead at all. It is a mix of graphite and clay. The grade tells you the balance between the two:
- H (hard) pencils have more clay. They make light, crisp, grey lines that don’t smudge easily, which is why they are used for planning a drawing and for technical work.
- HB sits in the middle. It’s the everyday writing pencil and a good all-rounder for sketching.
- F (fine) sits between HB and H. It holds a sharp point well but is not stocked by every brand.
- B (black) pencils have more graphite. They are softer and darker and are used for shading, shadows and expressive sketching.
The number makes the effect stronger: 4H is lighter and harder than 2H, and 8B is darker and softer than 2B. Most brands run from around 6H to 8B, and some art ranges go as soft as 12B or 14B. Grades are not identical between brands, so a 4B from one maker may look slightly different from another’s.
Which pencil grades should a beginner buy?
You don’t need every grade. A practical starting set is 2H, HB, 2B, 4B and 6B: 2H for the first light outline, HB and 2B for mid-tones, and 4B and 6B for shadows. Add an 8B or softer later if you like very deep darks, for example in portraits.

Paper, erasers and blending tools
- Paper: smooth paper suits fine detail, while paper with a little texture (“tooth”) holds more graphite for rich shading. Fabriano Accademia is a favourite with art students; our Fabriano Accademia paper guide explains the weights. See all papers for pencil drawing.
- Kneadable eraser: a kneadable eraser lifts graphite gently by dabbing, without wearing the paper surface.
- Eraser pen: a pencil-shaped eraser pen can be sharpened to pick out small highlights such as hair and reflections.
- Blending stumps: paper stumps smooth tones evenly. Avoid using your finger, because skin oils leave marks.
- Smudge guard: an anti-fouling mitten stops your hand smearing the drawing.
Tips for better shading
- Start light with a hard pencil, then build darker tones with B grades. It is easy to darken a drawing and hard to make it lighter.
- Keep a sharp point for detail and a blunt, angled point for broad shading.
- Shade in several light layers instead of pressing hard. Heavy pressure dents the paper and makes graphite look shiny.
- Shade in one direction or in small circles for a smooth, even tone.
- Keep a clean scrap of paper under your hand while you work.
How to keep pencil drawings from smudging
Graphite stays on the surface of the paper, so finished drawings can smudge. Store them flat between clean sheets, and frame important pieces behind glass. Very soft grades (6B and above) smudge the most.
Frequently asked questions
Which pencil is best for shading?
Soft B grades. Use 2B and 4B for mid-tones and 6B or softer for deep shadows.
Is HB a drawing pencil?
Yes. HB is a medium grade that works well for sketching and outlines, but you will need softer B grades for dark shading.
What pencils do I need for O/L or A/L art?
Always follow your teacher’s list. Many students use a range such as 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B.
Do you deliver islandwide?
Yes. We deliver across Sri Lanka in 2–5 working days, with cash on delivery, card or bank transfer. You can also visit our shops in Boralesgamuwa and Horana, open every day from 9 AM to 6 PM.
