Textured Canvas Art with Gesso and Palette Knives

Raised ridges, swirls and rough surfaces you can almost touch are very popular in modern wall art. Textured canvas art looks impressive, but it is simple to make with a texture gesso, a palette knife and acrylic paint. This Haanz Art Guide explains what to buy, how to build texture step by step, how long to let it dry in our humid weather, and how to paint and finish your piece.
What you need for textured canvas art
- Texture gesso. Mont Marte Premium White Texture Gesso 500ml primes and adds texture in one step.
- A canvas. Start with a small one such as the Bomeijia Canvas 20 x 30 cm, then move up to the Bomeijia Canvas 40 x 40 cm. Both are gesso-primed and ready to use.
- Palette knives. An Artist Palette Knife is good for spreading, and a Wooden Handle Palette Knife Set, 5 pcs gives you different shapes for different marks.
- A wide brush. The Gesso Brush 4 Pieces Pack has wide flat brushes for gesso and backgrounds.
- Acrylic paint. Mont Marte Acrylic Colour, 100ml comes in tubs, handy for covering textured surfaces.
- Optional texture tools: an old comb, a fork, a sponge, bubble wrap or cardboard pieces.

How to build texture step by step
- Plan a simple design. Abstract waves, a flower, or a sunset with a textured sea work well. Lightly sketch it in pencil.
- Scoop the gesso. Take some texture gesso on the palette knife, like butter on a knife.
- Spread and shape. Spread it on the canvas, then press, drag or flick the knife to make ridges. Keep most areas no thicker than a few millimetres, as very thick layers can crack.
- Add patterns. While it is wet, drag a comb, press a sponge or tap the back of a spoon into the surface. Leave some areas smooth for contrast.
- Clean your tools. Wash knives and brushes in water straight away, before the gesso dries on them.
- Let it dry completely. Thick texture takes much longer than paint. Follow the drying time on the tub, and in humid weather allow extra time, often overnight or longer. Dry it flat, in an airy room, out of direct sun.
Painting over the texture
- Base colour. Brush a thin coat of acrylic over the whole canvas. Work it into all the dips with the brush.
- Second colour. Once dry, mix a lighter shade. With an almost dry brush, lightly drag it over the surface. It catches only the raised ridges and makes the texture stand out.
- Metallic touches. Gold or silver on the edges of ridges looks rich and modern.
- Extra shine and body. Mix Art Rangers Gloss Gel 100ml into your paint. It thickens acrylic for texture and dries clear and glossy.
For a dramatic look, prime a canvas with Art Nation Black Gesso 500ml first, then build white texture and add bright colour on top.
Finishing and caring for your artwork
- When the paint is fully dry, brush on FUJIN Acrylic Varnish 100ml as a protective top coat. Use a soft brush so it reaches into the grooves.
- Paint the canvas edges so it looks finished without a frame.
- Dust textured art gently with a soft, dry brush.
Common mistakes
- Layers too thick. Very thick gesso may crack as it dries. Build up in two thinner layers instead.
- Painting too soon. Texture can feel dry on top but still be soft underneath. Wait.
- Texture everywhere. Leave some smooth areas, so the textured parts stand out.
- Forgetting to clean tools. Dried gesso is hard to remove from knives and brushes.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use ordinary gesso for texture?
Ordinary gesso is made to prime a surface in thin coats. For raised texture, a texture gesso or a thick gel mixed into paint works better.
Can I make textured art on paper?
Thick texture is heavy, so it can bend thin paper. A stretched canvas or a firm board is a safer choice.
