Haanz Art GuideFree, practical advice from the team at Haanz Art & Craft Materials

Flowers are one of the happiest things to paint, and you do not need years of practice to make them look lovely. Acrylic flower painting is mostly about simple shapes, a few good colour mixes and patience between layers. This Haanz Art Guide shows you how to paint a bunch of easy flowers on canvas, step by step, with the paints and brushes that suit beginners.

What you need for acrylic flower painting

Keep your first kit small. You can add more colours later, once you know which ones you reach for most.

Step by step: paint a simple bunch of flowers

  1. Paint the background first. Choose a calm colour, such as pale blue, soft green or warm cream. Cover the whole canvas with a flat brush and let it dry fully. A dry background stops your petals turning muddy.
  2. Sketch the flowers lightly. Draw a few circles for the flower heads, in different sizes. Overlap some of them. Add curved lines for the stems. Keep it loose.
  3. Block in the flower shapes. Fill each circle with a mid colour, for example a medium pink. Do not worry about petals yet. Let this layer dry.
  4. Paint the petals. Load the filbert brush with a lighter mix (your pink plus white). Press the brush down near the outside of the circle and pull it towards the centre. The rounded tip makes a natural petal shape. Go round the flower and leave some of the darker base showing between the petals.
  5. Add the centres. Use a small round brush and a yellow, orange or brown mix. Dab the centre with the tip of the brush to give it texture.
  6. Paint stems and leaves. Mix a green and add a little of your background colour, so the leaves sit nicely in the picture. Pull thin stems with the round brush. For leaves, press the filbert down and lift as you pull, so the leaf narrows to a point.
  7. Add highlights and shadows. Add a touch of white to the top edge of a few petals, where the light falls. Add a slightly darker mix close to the centre and under overlapping petals. Small touches make the flowers look round.
  8. Step back and finish. Look at the painting from across the room. Add a few small buds or dots of colour to fill empty spaces, then sign your work.

Colour tips for brighter flowers

  • Mix tints, not just pure colour. Pink plus white, red plus white and purple plus white give soft, natural petal colours.
  • Use a dark version of the same colour for shadows. Add a little blue or purple to darken pink, instead of black. Black can make flowers look dull.
  • Repeat your colours. If you use a purple flower on the left, add a small purple bud on the right. This makes the painting feel balanced.
  • Keep greens varied. Mix some greens with yellow and some with blue. Leaves all in one green look flat.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Painting on wet paint. Acrylic dries fast, but wait until each layer is dry to the touch before painting petals on top.
  • Too much water. Very watery acrylic looks streaky on canvas. Use just enough water to help the paint flow.
  • All flowers the same size. Mix big, medium and small flowers, and turn some to the side.
  • Leaving brushes to dry with paint. Rinse them often. Dried acrylic ruins the bristles.

Frequently asked questions

Which brush is easiest for painting petals?

A filbert brush is the easiest for most beginners. Its rounded tip gives a soft petal shape with one press and pull. A round brush is useful for stems, centres and small details.

Can I paint flowers on paper instead of canvas?

Yes. Use thick paper or a canvas pad so the paper does not buckle when it gets wet. Thin drawing paper may curl with acrylic paint.

Do you deliver islandwide?

Yes. We deliver across Sri Lanka in 2–5 working days, with cash on delivery, card or bank transfer. You can also visit our shops in Boralesgamuwa and Horana, open every day from 9 AM to 6 PM.
