Flat pieces are easy, but 3D resin shapes such as spheres, cubes and gems look stunning on a desk or shelf. A resin cube mould is especially popular for preserving flowers from a wedding or a special day. This Haanz Art Guide covers the 3D moulds we stock and the extra care deep pours need.

Why deep pours need extra care

When resin cures it gives off heat. In a thin layer the heat escapes, but in a thick cube or sphere it builds up, which can cause cracks, yellowing or bubbles. To avoid this:

  • Use a resin suitable for deep pours if possible, and follow its maximum depth.
  • Pour in layers. Let each layer thicken before adding the next, as your resin instructions allow.
  • Work in a cool room, away from direct sun.
  • Mix slowly to avoid stirring in air.

UV resin is not suitable for thick 3D pieces, because UV light cannot reach the centre.

Flower preservation cube: step by step

  1. Dry the flowers completely. Any moisture causes browning. See Dried Flowers in Resin.
  2. Seal delicate petals lightly so resin doesn’t soak in unevenly.
  3. Pour a base layer about 1cm deep and let it gel.
  4. Place the flowers face down or upright, depending on your design.
  5. Pour the next layers slowly, letting resin flow around the petals rather than onto them.
  6. Pop bubbles with a toothpick at each layer.
  7. Cure fully, then demould and polish the top surface if it is dull.

Spheres and gems

  • Fill sphere moulds through the pour hole slowly and tap gently to release air.
  • Gem moulds look lovely with clear or lightly tinted resin and a pinch of fine glitter.
  • Honeycomb pieces can be coloured in different cells using a pipette.

Finishing 3D pieces

  • Trim the pour spout on spheres with sandpaper, then add a thin top coat for shine.
  • Sand cube edges lightly if they are sharp.
  • Polish with a soft cloth. See Drilling, Sanding and Polishing Resin.

Caring for silicone moulds

Silicone moulds last a long time if you look after them:

  • Demould gently by flexing the silicone. Don’t pull pieces out with tools.
  • Wipe moulds clean with a soft cloth or tape to lift dust. Don’t scrub with anything rough, or the shiny finish of future pieces will suffer.
  • Store moulds flat, out of sunlight, and don’t stack heavy things on top, so they keep their shape.
  • Keep a separate set of moulds for resin only. Food and resin should never share moulds.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my cube crack?

Too much resin was poured at once, causing heat build-up. Pour thinner layers and let each one cool and gel before the next.

Why are there bubbles inside my sphere?

Air gets trapped in deep, closed moulds. Pour slowly, tap the mould and fill in stages.

Can I put a photo in a resin cube?

Yes, if you seal the photo first so it doesn’t soak up resin. Place it in a middle layer facing out.

Do you deliver islandwide?

Yes. We deliver across Sri Lanka in 2–5 working days, with cash on delivery, card or bank transfer. You can also visit our shops in Boralesgamuwa and Horana, open every day from 9 AM to 6 PM.
