How to Keep Acrylic Paint Wet on Your Palette

Acrylic paint dries fast. That is useful on the canvas, but frustrating when a carefully mixed colour turns into a hard skin on your palette after twenty minutes. An acrylic wet palette keeps your paint soft and usable for hours, and often for days. This Haanz Art Guide shows you how to make one at home with simple materials, plus other easy ways to keep acrylic paint wet while you work.
Why acrylic paint dries so quickly
Acrylic is a water-based paint. As the water evaporates, the paint forms a film and cannot be mixed again. It dries faster when the air moves across it, so a ceiling fan, a table fan or an air conditioner all speed it up. A thin smear dries much faster than a thick blob. In Sri Lanka, humid days can slow drying a little, but a fan or dry air-conditioned room can still dry a palette very quickly.
How to make an acrylic wet palette at home
A wet palette is simply a damp layer under a thin sheet that your paint sits on. Water passes slowly up through the sheet and keeps the paint moist.
You need: a shallow plastic box with an airtight lid (a clean food box works well), a few sheets of kitchen paper or a thin sponge, and a sheet of baking paper (also called parchment paper).
- Line the box. Fold three or four sheets of kitchen paper to fit the bottom of the box, or cut a thin sponge to size.
- Soak the layer. Pour in clean water until the paper or sponge is fully wet. Tip out the extra water. It should be damp and shiny, not swimming.
- Prepare the baking paper. Cut a piece to fit the box. Some painters soak it in water for a few minutes first so it lies flat.
- Lay it on top. Place the baking paper on the wet layer and smooth out any air bubbles with your hand or a palette knife.
- Add your paint. Squeeze small amounts of paint onto the baking paper and mix as usual.
- Close the lid between sessions. When you take a break, put the lid on. The paint stays soft much longer inside the closed box.
Looking after your wet palette
- Add water when it dries out. If the paper under the sheet feels dry, lift a corner and add a little water.
- Do not overfill. Too much water makes the paint runny and the colours can spread into each other.
- Change the paper often. In warm weather, a closed, damp box can grow mould. Change the kitchen paper and baking paper every few days and wash the box.
- Keep it out of direct sun. Store the closed box in a cool, shaded spot.
- Scrape, do not scrub. Use a plastic palette knife to move paint. A sharp edge can tear the baking paper.
Other ways to keep acrylic paint wet
- Use a retarder. FUJIN Acrylic Retarder 100ml slows the drying of acrylic paint, which gives you more time to blend. Mix in small amounts as directed on the bottle.
- Mist your palette. A light spray of clean water from a small spray bottle every few minutes keeps paint workable on an ordinary palette.
- Squeeze out less. Put out small amounts and add more when needed. Larger containers like Mont Marte Acrylic Colour 100ml make topping up easy.
- Turn off the fan near your table while you mix, if the room is comfortable.
- Keep mixes in blobs, not smears. A thick blob of paint dries more slowly than a thin layer.

Frequently asked questions
How long does paint last in a wet palette?
It depends on the room, how much paint you put out and how well the lid seals. With the lid closed, paint often stays soft for a day or more. Check it and add water if the paper is drying out.
Can I use a wet palette for watercolour or oil paint?
Wet palettes are made for acrylic and similar water-based paints like gouache. Watercolour can be rewetted anyway, and oil paint does not mix with water, so a wet palette is not needed for them.
