How to Draw a Landscape in Pencil

Sri Lanka is full of scenes worth drawing: paddy fields, tea hills, rivers, palm-lined beaches and misty mountains. Pencil landscape drawing is a calm, simple way to capture them with just a few pencils and a sketch pad. This Haanz Art Guide covers the supplies you need, how to plan a landscape in three layers, and a clear step-by-step method from first lines to finished shading.
What you need
- A range of pencils: the Nyoni Sketch Drawing Pencil Pack, 14 pcs gives you hard to soft grades in one pack. Use hard grades (H, 2H) for the far distance and soft grades (4B, 6B) for the dark foreground.
- Woodless graphite: the Art Nation Woodless Graphite Pencils, 6 pcs are solid graphite, useful for covering large areas of sky or ground quickly with the side of the pencil.
- Blending and erasing: Art Nation Paper Stumps soften skies and distant hills, and the Nyoni Sketch Eraser pen lifts light shapes such as clouds, birds or a shining river.
- Paper: the Bomeijia Sketch Pad A4, 160gsm, 24 sheets is a good everyday choice for pencil and charcoal.
- For outdoor drawing: a Sketch Tote Board 35 x 44cm has a carrying handle and clips to hold your paper. Low-tack Nyoni Artist Masking Tape gives you a clean border.
- To finish: spray Kuelox Fixative 300ml lightly to reduce smudging.

Plan your pencil landscape drawing in three layers
Most landscapes are easier to draw when you split them into three layers:
- Background: sky and far mountains. Very light, soft edges, little detail.
- Middle ground: trees, fields, buildings or a river. Medium tones and some detail.
- Foreground: rocks, grass, a fence or a path close to you. The darkest tones and the sharpest detail.
This change from light and soft in the distance to dark and sharp up close is called atmospheric perspective. It is the main secret of depth in a landscape.
Step by step
- Choose your scene and frame. Use a photo or look out of a window. Decide where the horizon goes. Placing it about one third from the top or bottom usually looks more natural than the exact middle.
- Sketch the big shapes. With a 2H, lightly outline the horizon, hill shapes, the main tree groups and any path or river. No details yet.
- Shade the sky. Use the side of a woodless pencil or an HB with very light pressure. Blend with a paper stump. Lift clouds with the eraser pen.
- Add distant hills. Shade them in light grey with an H or HB. Keep edges soft. Each hill closer to you can be a little darker.
- Build the middle ground. Use 2B for trees and fields. Show trees as soft clumps of tone with a lighter side facing the sun and a darker shadow side. Draw paddy rows or tea bushes as curved bands that get smaller and closer together as they go back.
- Draw the foreground. Switch to 4B and 6B. Add texture: blades of grass, stones, the bark of a nearby tree. This is where you put your strongest darks.
- Check the light. Make sure all shadows fall in the same direction. Shadows on the ground help objects look like they sit on the land.
- Clean up and fix. Erase smudges, sharpen a few key edges, then spray fixative in a well-ventilated place.
Tips for better landscapes
- Squint at your scene. It hides small details and shows the main light and dark shapes.
- Do not draw every leaf. Suggest texture and let the viewer fill in the rest.
- Water reflects what is above it. Draw reflections slightly darker, with horizontal strokes.
- Draw outdoors early in the morning or late afternoon, when shadows are long and the heat is lower.
- Trees are a big part of most scenes. Read How to Draw Trees and Leaves for practice ideas.
Common mistakes
- Same darkness everywhere. The scene looks flat. Keep the distance light.
- Horizon tilted. Use the edge of your sketch pad to check it is level.
- Hard outlines on far hills. Use tone, not lines, in the background.

Frequently asked questions
Which pencils do I need for a landscape drawing?
A 2H or H for the far distance, HB and 2B for the middle ground, and 4B to 6B for the foreground cover most scenes. A pack with a full range saves you buying grades one by one.
How do I make my landscape look deep?
Keep the background light with soft edges, and make the foreground darker and more detailed. Objects should also get smaller as they go back.
