Haanz Art GuideFree, practical advice from the team at Haanz Art & Craft Materials

A resin photo frame turns a favourite picture into a keepsake. With a frame mould you can make wedding gifts, baby keepsakes and memorial pieces decorated with flowers, foil or glitter. This Haanz Art Guide explains the frame moulds we stock, how to add photos without spoiling them, and design ideas.

Frame moulds we stock

All are flexible silicone moulds that release easily and can be reused.

Finishing touches: the Photo Frame Nail Set, Silver Colour and Gold Colour are decorative nails for fixing and decorating resin photo frames and displays.

Two ways to add a photo

1. Photo behind the frame (simplest). Pour the frame as a decorative border. After it cures, place the photo behind the opening and fix it with a backing card and tape or the frame nails. The photo can be changed later.

2. Photo inside the resin. The photo becomes part of the piece. Because paper can soak up resin and turn see-through or blotchy, you must seal it first:

  1. Print or cut the photo to size.
  2. Seal both sides with a thin coat of clear glue or sealer and let it dry completely. Repeat once.
  3. Pour a thin layer of resin, let it thicken slightly, then place the photo face down (for the front of the mould).
  4. Press out air bubbles gently and pour the next layer.

Test your sealing method on a spare print first.

Decorating the frame

Step by step

  1. Clean and level the mould.
  2. Plan the layout on paper the same size as the mould.
  3. Mix resin as directed, then pour a thin first layer.
  4. Arrange flowers, foil and stickers with tweezers.
  5. Pour the remaining resin slowly from one side.
  6. Pop bubbles, cover against dust and cure fully.
  7. Demould gently, sand any sharp edges, and add a backing or stand.

Gift ideas

  • Wedding: heart frame with the couple’s photo, white flowers and the wedding date.
  • New baby: pastel frame with the baby’s first photo and name.
  • Graduation: square frame with a graduation photo and gold flakes.
  • Memorial: oval frame with a favourite photo and dried flowers from a special occasion.

Tips

  • Use photos printed on good photo paper; they hold up better than thin paper.
  • Keep resin frames out of strong direct sun to help colours last.
  • Wear gloves and work in a ventilated room. Read Resin Safety first.

Caring for silicone moulds

Silicone moulds last a long time if you look after them:

  • Demould gently by flexing the silicone. Don’t pull pieces out with tools.
  • Wipe moulds clean with a soft cloth or tape to lift dust. Don’t scrub with anything rough, or the shiny finish of future pieces will suffer.
  • Store moulds flat, out of sunlight, and don’t stack heavy things on top, so they keep their shape.
  • Keep a separate set of moulds for resin only. Food and resin should never share moulds.

Frequently asked questions

Will my photo be ruined by resin?

Unsealed paper can darken or turn see-through. Seal it well first, or place the photo behind the frame instead of inside.
