Rainy-Day Art and Craft Ideas for Kids

When the monsoon rain keeps everyone indoors, children can get bored quickly. A box of simple materials turns a wet afternoon into a creative one. This Haanz Art Guide shares easy rainy day crafts for kids, from pipe cleaner animals to finger painting and clay models, with clear steps, the supplies you need and tips to keep the mess under control.
Build a rainy-day craft box
Keep a box ready before the rainy season starts, so you can open it the moment children say “I’m bored”. Here is what we suggest:
- Pipe Cleaners With Pom Poms 10pcs for bendy animals, flowers and figures.
- Foam Sheet – 2mm A4 Size and Glitter Self Adhesive Eva Foam A4 Size, which are easy to cut into masks, bookmarks and shapes.
- Felt Sheet – A4 Size for soft puppets and picture scenes.
- KeepSmiling Kids Finger Paint 6x30ml for little hands that love messy painting.
- Air Dry Polymer Clay 250g, which hardens as it dries, with no oven needed.
- Fujin Coloring Book-Animals 1 -A5, 30Pgs for quiet time.
- Kids Long Sleeve Apron -S to keep school clothes clean.

Five rainy day crafts for kids
1. Pipe cleaner animals
- Twist one pipe cleaner into a small coil for the body.
- Bend a second pipe cleaner into legs and wrap it around the body.
- Add a pom pom for the head and shape ears or a tail with short pieces.
- Make a whole family, then put on a little show.
2. Foam sheet masks
- Draw an animal face on a foam sheet, about the width of your child’s face.
- An adult cuts out the mask and the eye holes.
- Decorate with glitter foam shapes. The self-adhesive back means no glue is needed.
- Make two small holes at the sides and tie on string or elastic.
3. Finger painting rain pictures
Cover the table, put on aprons and let children paint grey clouds, blue raindrops and a bright rainbow with their fingertips. Talk about the colours as they mix. This is great for early years.
4. Clay mini creatures
Roll small balls of air-dry clay into snails, frogs and fish. Press in eyes with a pencil tip. Leave them to dry for a few days, turning them over so they dry evenly.
5. Felt picture story
Cut houses, trees, clouds and people from felt. Felt pieces cling lightly to each other, so children can move them around on a felt background to tell a story.
Tips to keep indoor crafts calm and tidy
- Cover the table with old newspaper or a plastic sheet before you start.
- Put out only the materials for one craft at a time.
- Keep wet wipes and a small bin nearby.
- Let paintings and clay dry on a tray away from busy areas. In damp weather, drying takes longer, so be patient.
- Give each child a job at clean-up time, like collecting scraps or washing brushes.
Safety for young crafters
- An adult should handle sharp scissors and cutting. Children can use small scissors such as Seaking Scissors – S with supervision.
- Pom poms, beads and small clay pieces can be a choking hazard for children under 3. Keep them out of reach of babies and toddlers.
- Always wash hands after painting and clay play.

Frequently asked questions
Which craft is easiest for a 4-year-old?
Finger painting and pipe cleaner shapes are easy for small hands. Foam sheet crafts work well too, as long as an adult does the cutting.
Do I need an oven for clay crafts?
Not with air-dry clay. It hardens as it dries, so it is a simple choice for rainy-day clay play at home.
Do you deliver islandwide?
Yes. We deliver across Sri Lanka in 2–5 working days, with cash on delivery, card or bank transfer. You can also visit our shops in Boralesgamuwa and Horana, open every day from 9 AM to 6 PM.
