Setting Up a Home Art Corner

Wooden Easel - 150 - Haanz Sri Lanka
Haanz Art GuideFree, practical advice from the team at Haanz Art & Craft Materials

You do not need a big studio to make art regularly. A small, well-organised home art corner makes it easy to sit down and create, whether you are a student, a parent setting up a space for children, or an adult hobbyist. This Haanz Art Guide shows you how to choose the spot, set up the furniture and tools, keep supplies safe from humidity and make clean-up quick.

Choose the right spot

  1. Look for good light. A place near a window gives soft daylight, which shows colours truly. Avoid strong direct sun on your paper or paints.
  2. Think about mess. A tiled floor is easier to clean than carpet. If you paint, choose a corner away from sofas and curtains.
  3. Keep air moving. A fan or open window helps paint dry and keeps the space comfortable, which matters in our warm climate.
  4. Plan for storage. Leave space for a shelf, a drawer unit or a few plastic boxes close to your table.
  5. Make it inviting. If supplies are easy to see and reach, you are far more likely to use them.

Furniture and surfaces

  • An easel: a standing Wooden Easel – 150 has an adjustable canvas holder for painting upright. If space is tight, a foldable Beech Wood Portable Easel can be packed away after use.
  • A drawing surface: a Sketch Tote Board 35x44cm has clips to hold paper and a handle, so you can draw at the table, on the sofa or outdoors.
  • A table cover: a Cutting Mat – 45x30cm protects the table when you cut paper or card, and has grid lines for measuring.
  • A comfortable chair at the right height, so your arm can move freely.

Home art corner storage in humid weather

Sri Lanka’s humidity can cause paper to curl, pads to grow mould spots and paint lids to stick. A few habits help:

  1. Store paper flat in a closed drawer or a plastic box, away from outside walls.
  2. Add moisture absorbers such as silica gel packets to boxes of paper and pastels.
  3. Clean lids before closing. Wipe tube and bottle threads so they open easily next time.
  4. Dry brushes properly. Reshape the tips and lay them flat or stand them tip up to dry.
  5. Group by type. One box for drawing, one for paint, one for craft. Label each box.

Tips for keeping it tidy

  • Finish each session with a five-minute clean-up. Wash brushes, close lids and put paper away.
  • Keep a damp cloth and paper towels within reach for spills.
  • Hang finished work on a wall or string line. It keeps the table clear and makes the space feel like yours.
  • For children, use low shelves and clear boxes so they can find and return items themselves.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do I need for a home art corner?

Even a small table and one shelf is enough to start. Add an easel later if you paint on canvas often.

Where should I keep paints at home?

Store them in a cool, dry place out of direct sun, with lids tightly closed. Keep them out of reach of small children.
