Haanz Art GuideFree, practical advice from the team at Haanz Art & Craft Materials

Many people in Sri Lanka start making resin keychains, coasters and jewellery as a hobby, and then friends begin asking to order them. Turning that hobby into a small handmade resin business at home is possible, but it takes practice, planning and careful safety habits. This Haanz Art Guide covers how to choose your first products, set up a safe work space, keep quality steady, photograph your work and handle custom orders. It does not promise any income, because every business is different.

Start with skill, not stock

Before you sell anything, make the same item many times. Your tenth coaster will be much better than your first. Use this practice stage to learn how your resin behaves in your room, how long it takes to cure and which moulds release cleanly. Keep a simple notebook of every pour: the date, the weather, how much you mixed and what went wrong. These notes quickly become your own rule book.

Choose a small first product range

It is easier to do three things well than twenty things badly. Pick a few items that use the same materials, so you buy less and waste less. Popular starting points are:

What you need to set up at home

Set up a safe resin work space

  1. Choose a separate area. Use a corner or room away from the kitchen and where you sleep, with windows or a fan for ventilation.
  2. Protect yourself. Wear nitrile gloves every time. Resin on skin can cause irritation that gets worse with repeated contact.
  3. Keep it clean. Cover tables with plastic sheet and keep a dust cover ready for curing pieces.
  4. Store safely. Keep resin closed, labelled and out of reach of children and pets, in a cool, dry place away from direct sun.
  5. Follow the pack. Always use the maker’s mix ratio and cure times. Rushing a cure leads to soft or sticky items.

Run your handmade resin business with care

  • Check every piece. Look for bubbles, sharp edges and soft spots before you pack. Sand rough edges and only send work you are proud of.
  • Photograph well. Use daylight near a window and a plain background. Show the item in a hand for size.
  • Be clear on custom orders. Confirm names, colours and spelling in writing, and allow time for curing. Many epoxies need a day or more before a piece can be demoulded and packed.
  • Keep records. Note what you spend on materials and how long each item takes, so you can make sensible decisions.
  • Pack with care. Wrap pieces in soft paper or bubble wrap so they arrive scratch-free.
  • Check the rules. Ask your local authority about any registration you may need as your business grows.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use epoxy resin or UV resin for small items?

UV resin is quick for small, thin pieces like earrings and charms. Epoxy resin is better for bigger or deeper pieces like coasters and trays. Many makers use both.

How do I stop customers’ pieces from turning yellow?

Store resin and finished pieces away from strong sunlight and heat, keep bottles tightly closed, and use resin within the time the maker recommends. Any resin can change colour over time in strong sun.
