T-Shirt and Tote Bag Painting Step by Step

Art Rangers Textile Paint Set - 12X12ml - Haanz Sri Lanka
Haanz Art GuideFree, practical advice from the team at Haanz Art & Craft Materials

T-shirt painting is a fun way to make your own clothes, gifts and school event shirts. A plain cotton T-shirt or canvas tote bag becomes something you can wear or carry every day. This Haanz Art Guide covers the materials you need, how to prepare the fabric, a simple step-by-step method and how to make your design last through washing.

What you need for T-shirt and tote bag painting

You do not need much to start. Choose paint or markers made for fabric, because ordinary paint can crack or wash out.

You will also need a plain cotton T-shirt or tote bag, a piece of cardboard, a pencil or chalk, a jar of water and an old cloth. See all colours in Fabric Paints. Prices change, so see each product page for today’s price.

Prepare the fabric first

Good preparation is half the result. Most problems with fabric painting start here.

  1. Wash and dry the fabric. New T-shirts and bags often have a finish that stops paint soaking in. Wash without fabric softener and let it dry fully. In humid weather, give it extra time in the sun.
  2. Iron it flat. Creases make wobbly lines.
  3. Put cardboard inside. Slide a piece of cardboard inside the shirt or bag. This stops paint bleeding through to the back and keeps the fabric tight.
  4. Draw your design lightly. Use a soft pencil or tailor’s chalk. Keep the first design simple: a word, a flower, a leaf or a few shapes.

How to paint a T-shirt step by step

  1. Shake and test. Shake the bottle well. Try a small stroke on the inside hem or a spare piece of cloth to see how the colour looks on your fabric.
  2. Paint the large areas first. Use the flat brush and work the paint into the weave. Fabric drinks paint, so use short, firm strokes rather than a thin wash.
  3. Add a second coat if needed. On dark fabric, light colours may look weak. Let the first coat dry to the touch, then add another.
  4. Paint details last. Switch to the round brush or a fabric marker for outlines, faces and lettering.
  5. Let it dry flat. Leave it overnight away from dust. Do not fold it while wet.
  6. Fix the colour. Follow the instructions on your paint pack. Many fabric paints are set by ironing the back of the design once it is fully dry. Do not wash it before this step.

Tote bag and stencil ideas

Canvas tote bags are thicker than T-shirts, so they take paint well and make great gifts. Try these ideas:

  • Stencil leaves. Cut a leaf shape from card, hold it flat and dab colour through it with the stencil brush. Use very little paint on the brush to keep edges crisp.
  • Spray gradient. Lay the bag outside on newspaper and spray two colours that blend in the middle. Cover the handles with paper.
  • Name or quote. Pencil the letters first, then go over them with a fabric marker.
  • Kids’ handprints. Brush paint onto a child’s palm and press it down firmly. Wash hands straight away.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the cardboard. Paint soaks through and marks the back.
  • Too much paint at once. Thick blobs can crack when the fabric bends. Build up thin layers instead.
  • Using a stretchy fabric for a first try. Smooth cotton is easier than stretchy sports material.
  • Washing too soon. Wait until the paint is dry and fixed, then wash inside out in cool water.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paint on a polyester T-shirt?

Cotton and cotton blends take fabric paint most easily. Some polyester works, but test a small hidden area first and follow your paint pack.

How do I wash a painted T-shirt?

Turn it inside out and wash gently in cool water. Avoid bleach, and dry it in the shade so the colours stay bright.
