Choosing Pressed Flowers and Leaves for Craft and Resin

Dry Flowers Mix Box - DF01 - Haanz Sri Lanka
Haanz Art GuideFree, practical advice from the team at Haanz Art & Craft Materials

Real pressed flowers add a delicate, natural touch to resin jewellery, bookmarks, cards and frames. But which flowers suit which project? This Haanz Art Guide goes through the pressed flowers, leaves and dried botanicals we stock, what each looks like and how to store them so they keep their colour.

Single-variety pressed flowers

Dried (not pressed) botanicals

These have more volume, so they suit deeper pours, cubes and arrangements rather than flat cards.

Matching flowers to projects

  • Bookmarks: long sprays such as Ammi majus with branch, plus a few small blooms.
  • Earrings and pendants: small florets such as hydrangea, small Ammi majus and babysbreath.
  • Phone cases and cards: flat daisies and leaves.
  • Resin trays and coasters: a mix box for variety.
  • Flower preservation: the Circle Preservation Mold D2281, a round mould 20cm across and 4.5cm deep, made for preserving flowers, bouquets and keepsakes in clear epoxy resin. A second size, D2280, is also available.

Working with pressed flowers in resin

  • Seal delicate petals with a thin coat of clear glue or sealer so resin doesn’t soak in and darken them.
  • Place flowers with tweezers on a thin, partly set layer of resin, then pour over gently.
  • Keep flowers completely dry. Moisture causes browning.

Step-by-step instructions are in Dried Flowers in Resin.

Design tips for floral pieces

  • Use odd numbers. Three or five flowers look more natural than two or four.
  • Mix sizes. Combine one larger bloom with smaller fillers like babysbreath.
  • Add a leaf. A little green makes flowers stand out.
  • Leave space. Clear areas around flowers make them look delicate, not crowded.
  • Face flowers the right way. In a mould, whatever touches the bottom becomes the front of the piece.

Storing pressed flowers

  • Keep them flat in their packs or between sheets of paper inside a book.
  • Store in a dry place, away from sunlight, which fades colours.
  • In humid weather, keep them in a sealed box with a silica gel sachet.
