On white paper, you can only add darks; the paper itself is the lightest tone. Drawing on toned paper changes that. The paper becomes your middle tone, so you draw the shadows in dark pencil or charcoal and the highlights in white. Drawings look three-dimensional surprisingly quickly. This guide explains which papers and materials to use and how to build a toned drawing step by step.

Why use toned paper?

  • Faster results: the paper already provides the mid-tone, so you only add lights and darks.
  • Stronger highlights: white charcoal or a white gel pen stands out brightly on a mid-tone.
  • Better tonal thinking: it trains you to see light, mid-tone and shadow as separate areas.
  • Striking look: portraits, animals and still life look dramatic on brown, grey or coloured paper.

How to draw on toned paper, step by step

  1. Sketch your subject lightly with a charcoal or graphite pencil.
  2. Decide where the light comes from.
  3. Shade the shadow side with your dark pencil or charcoal. Leave the paper showing for the mid-tones.
  4. Add highlights with white charcoal on the lit side, using light pressure at first.
  5. Blend the white gently into the paper colour where light turns into mid-tone.
  6. Finish with a few bright accents in white gel pen, such as the shine in an eye.

Tips for drawing on toned paper

  • Use white sparingly. If everything is white, nothing stands out. Save the brightest white for the brightest points.
  • Never mix white and dark charcoal together on the paper; it turns grey and muddy. Keep them in separate areas.
  • Use separate blending stumps for white and dark.
  • Let the paper do the work: leave plenty of untouched mid-tone.
  • Spray lightly with fixative when finished to reduce smudging. See our guide to stopping smudges.

Subjects that look great on toned paper

  • Portraits: white highlights on the forehead, nose and eyes make faces come alive.
  • Animals: fur and whiskers look soft with a few white strokes.
  • Glass and metal: shiny objects need bright highlights, which toned paper shows beautifully.
  • Clouds and night scenes: on dark or black paper, white and metallic pens glow.
  • Still life: fruit and pots gain a strong sense of form with just three tones.

Frequently asked questions

What colour toned paper is good for beginners?

A mid-brown or mid-grey paper is easiest, because both darks and whites show clearly.

Can I use colour pencils on toned paper?

Yes. Light colours glow on brown and grey paper, and white pencil adds highlights.

Is white charcoal the same as white pastel?

They work in a similar way for highlights. White charcoal pencils give more control for small areas.
