Fun Art Activities for Young Kids: Bath Crayons, Boards and Dig Kits

Dig & Discover Marine Animals set - Haanz Sri Lanka
Haanz Art GuideFree, practical advice from the team at Haanz Art & Craft Materials

Young children learn through play, and simple art activities for kids build hand control, colour sense and confidence long before they start school art. This Haanz Art Guide covers the playful products we stock for little ones, with easy ideas to keep them busy and creative at home or in pre-school.

Bath crayons

Bath crayons let children draw on bath tiles and tubs, then wash the colour away with water. Bath time becomes drawing time, and it’s a gentle way to practise shapes and letters. Test on a small area of tile first, and wipe drawings away after each bath.

Colouring books

The Richard My Colouring Book 3 is a colouring book with fun pictures for young children, from a popular local brand. Colouring helps children learn to hold crayons and pencils and to stay inside lines.

Tips for little colourers:

  • Start with chunky crayons, then move to pencils.
  • Praise effort, not neatness. Scribbling is an important stage.
  • Talk about colours: “What colour is the sky? Can you find something red?”

Chalkboard and whiteboard

The Black Board and White Board (CK 133) has a chalkboard on one side and a whiteboard on the other, for drawing and early learning. Children can practise letters, numbers and drawings again and again without using up paper.

For whiteboard markers and more classroom boards, see Whiteboard Markers and Classroom Boards.

Dig and Discover

The Dig and Discover Marine Animals Set is a dig-out activity where kids uncover ocean animal figures. It mixes play with learning about sea creatures, and makes a great gift. Afterwards, children can draw or paint the animals they found.

Party favours: bendy pencils

The Flexible Bendy Rubber Pencil bends and twists. Please note it is a novelty toy and is not for writing. Children love them as party favours and goody-bag fillers.

Activity ideas by age

  • Ages 2 to 3: bath crayons, big chalk drawings and scribbling with chunky crayons.
  • Ages 3 to 5: colouring books, drawing shapes on the whiteboard, finger painting. See Painting with Toddlers.
  • Ages 5 to 7: dig kits, simple craft projects and drawing what they discover. See Craft Materials for Kids.

Simple games to play

  • Colour hunt: name a colour and ask your child to draw something that colour on the board.
  • Finish the picture: draw half a face or a house and let your child finish it.
  • Shape bath: draw circles, squares and triangles on the bath tiles and ask your child to copy them.
  • Story drawing: read a short story, then ask your child to draw their favourite part.
  • Sea creature count: after a dig kit, count and name each animal, then draw them in a row.

These games build vocabulary and fine motor skills while feeling like play.

Making art time easy for parents

  • Cover the table with newspaper or a plastic sheet.
  • Use an old shirt as an apron.
  • Keep sessions short, about 15 to 20 minutes for little ones.
  • Put art away in a box together, so children learn to tidy up.
  • Display their work on the fridge or a wall; it makes children proud.

Safety

  • Supervise young children with any art material.
  • Small parts in kits can be a choking hazard for babies and toddlers. Check age guidance on packs.
  • Wash hands after play.
